Doula & Antenatal Educator

Leslie Altic

Hi. I’m Leslie, originally from the States but happily settled in Belfast since 1998.  I have two amazing girls at home, Abigail born in 2010 and Maya born in 2013, a wonderfully supportive husband Tommy and 2 fur babies, our cats Alex and Oreo. And since having kids I have become a self-confessed birth nerd!

I have 3 babies, all born in the Royal, and from personal experience I know that the journey to parenthood can be difficult. Our first baby, Joshua, was stillborn in 2009 and the decision to try again was not an easy one. We did go on to have 2 healthy, but extremely anxious pregnancies made that bit easier with the continuous support from the same caregiver throughout. Both babies were born following very quick and relatively easy induced labours, as that was the decision that was right for me.

My own journey deepened my appreciation of just how precious pregnancy and birth are. I believe that with the right information and support, birth can and should be a positive and empowering life-changing event. That’s why I am passionate about supporting parents with care and compassion, helping them to find their own path and make their own informed decisions.

I initially trained as an antenatal practitioner but found that I really loved building 1-to-1 relationships with families. So, I trained as a birth and postnatal doula! It is so special to provide continuous support and truly get to know each family. This connection means that I can offer personalised care and can support them in they way that they need. I’ve also trained as a KGHypnobirth teacher, Aquanatal Yoga instructor, and a 3-step Rewind practitioner, continually learning from each family I support.

Over the years, I’ve been involved in all things birth, from running baby groups when my own were babies to volunteering with Sands as a befriender, particularly supporting families going through pregnancy after a loss. I also play an active role in helping to shape, influence and improve maternity services across Northern Ireland through Maternity Voices Partnerships, regional policy and guideline working groups and linking with QUB Midwifery program. I believe it’s vital that women’s voices are heard in shaping services that prioritize their needs.

Expectant parents deserve a meaningful and positive birth experience. My aim is to help them feel supported, nurtured and safe throughout their journey as they confidently transition into parenthood.
